Pence defends military mom’s right to criticize Trump

“However, some attendees continued to insult the woman after the event, with one accusing her of “[violating] everyone elses rights” by questioning Pence in public.

The woman said her son serves in the US Air Force. “Let me say I know this has been much in the news lately, in the last few days but as I said last night and as Donald Trump said on Saturday night, Captain Khan is an American hero and we honor him and we honor his family as we do all gold star families”.

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump (R) and Indiana Governor Mike Pence (L) take the stage during a campaign rally at Grant Park Event Center in Westfield, Indiana, on July 12, 2016.

“Donald Trump will support men and woman in uniform, he will restore law and order to the streets of this nation, he will make sure our law enforcement officers have the resources they need to protect our families and go home safe to theirs”, the candidate said.

The crowd booed Byrne as she asked her question.

He then went on to claim that Trump supports veterans “like no other leader in my lifetime”. One attendee said that the rally was “probably not the best place to do that”.

Mike Pence is certainly no stranger to controversy or drama. Any opposition from him would look like treachery to the campaign. Considering the nicknames Trump has given people, including “Crooked Hillary”, “Lyin’ Ted”, and calling Elizabeth Warren “Pocahontas”, it would seem that Pence should save that advice for his running mate. Pence, to his credit, did a good job of responding in Carson City. “Folks, that’s what freedom looks like, and that’s what freedom sounds like. Ok?”

His statement, on Monday, could be seen as an attempt to soften the image that Trump is now portraying to the world, but it is also a tightrope walk for the governor. It is hard to see where Mike Pence is contradicting the GOP’s presidential nominee and where he is just trying to show the “softer side” of Trump.
