Clinton picks Kaine for VP

Kaine, the Virginia senator picked by Clinton on Friday as her vice-presidential running mate, said the phrase “Crooked Hillary” and chants at last week’s Republican convention to “lock her up” are “just ridiculous”. “Were going to be ‘compañeros de alma, in this great ‘lucha ahead, ” he said, or “soul mates in this great fight ahead.”.

Clinton’s campaign stood firmly behind their claims of Russian involvement Monday. “To lead their convention with that tells me they really are trying to move away from what the issues are going to be in this campaign”.

Oil and gas companies donated almost US$60,000 to Kaine for his 2011 campaign, including US$35,000 from Dominion Resources Inc., the Richmond-based utility that supplies electricity and natural gas to Virginia and other neighboring and eastern states.

There is now very little for moderate Republicans to hate on the Clinton-Kaine ticket.

“On his worst, worst, worst day, Tim Kaine is 100 times better than Donald Trump will ever be”, Sanders said.

Kaine, a former governor of the state, was widely seen as the “safe choice” to help propel Clinton to the White House.

Sanders, who has endorsed Clinton, encouraged his supporters to vote for the ticket, saying the top priority in the November election is to defeat Trump. Kaine used to sing regularly with the choir, has mentored the church’s youth, and was part of a church men’s club. But he struggled to appeal to black voters and couldn’t match the former secretary of state’s ties to the Democratic establishment.

At a White House news conference with Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto, Obama said crime rates, especially those for violent crime, are lower than at any time in the past 30 years.

Kenny Madden, a Sanders delegate from Kentucky, said he doesn’t “think there can be anything Bernie can say that will bring people together”.

Hundreds of neighbors and other well-wishers greeted Kaine and his wife, Anne Holton, on their return to their home in Richmond on a hot and sticky evening.

He is viewed skeptically by some liberals in the Democratic Party, who dislike his support of free trade and Wall Street.

Sanders scored the resignation of party chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz, a nemesis in the primaries, but that wasn’t enough to quell the anger of supporters.

“Donald Trump has no real plans for jobs, for college kids, for seniors”, she said in the keynote address. Sanders had complained about the superdelegates, which overwhelmingly backed Clinton.

Solomon said he believes a “vast majority” of Sanders delegates support these kinds of protests to express their dismay. He said there is talk among Sanders’ delegates of walking out during Kaine’s acceptance speech or turning their backs as a show of protest.

“Most Harvard Law graduates dont go into civil rights work in the South, ” said Cohen, who first met Kaine when he served as Richmonds mayor. Hes never run after big money.

She pointed to the Republican National Convention: “Unfounded, inaccurate, mean-spirited attacks with no basis in truth, reality – which take on a life of their own, and for whatever reasons and I don’t want to try to analyze the reasons”.
