Royals’ Duffy holds Rays hitless through 6 innings
It was a day to remember for Kansas City Royals pitcher Danny Duffy.

On August 1, 2016, Danny Duffy broke a almost seven year old franchise record by striking out 16 in Tampa Bay to help the Royals defeat the Rays 3-0.
The Rays came six outs away from being no-hit for the first time since Felix Hernandez threw a ideal game against them on August 15, 2012 in Seattle, and being the Royals first victim since 1991.
“There’s been a number of occasions when Danny’s stepped on the mound and I said this might be the night”, Royals manager Ned Yost said. “He had everything going”. Duffy gave up only one walk in the second inning to Logan Forsythe on a full count.
Kendrys Morales’ 18th home run, a towering shot over the center field wall off Rays starter Chris Archer, got the Royals on the scoreboard in the seventh.
A person with knowledge of the trade says the NL West-leading San Francisco Giants have acquired left-handed starter Matt Moore from the Tampa Bay Rays for third baseman Matt Duffy.
“It was hittable, a good pitch to hit”, Jennings said of the fastball he hit into the left-field corner.
Duffy was asked if there was disappointment after giving up the hit in the eighth, and he was blunt in saying there wasn’t, with his focus squarely on just winning.
“I saw a zero up there, but I’m not pitching to that”.
The trade came moments before the Major League Baseball trade deadline time of 4 p.m. The Rays were playing with only 23 players – just a two-man bench – due to three trades made before the game.
Kelvin Herrera worked a flawless ninth for his second save. Davis and the Royals are hopeful he will be able to come off the disabled list when he becomes eligible August 12. The Rays have been no-hit five times, most recently by Seattle’s Felix Hernandez in 2012, and only once at Tropicana Field, by Arizona’s Edwin Jackson in 2010.
Archer only allowed multiple baserunners in two of his seven-plus innings of work, throwing first-pitch strikes to 18-of-28 batters faced while 69 of his 102 total pitches ended up as strikes in the books (56 swinging, 13 called, 43 fouls, 13 swings-and-misses). Same in the sixth, when Raul Mondesi reached on a strikeout and wild pitch, took second on a sacrifice bunt, but Archer again got an inning-ending double play off the bat of Cuthbert. They added two more runs on three hits in the eighth.
So what if if it was only Steve Pearce and Brandon Guyer who were traded from the lineup. That will shift current SS Brad Miller to either first base or the outfield.
The defending World Series champions entered Monday on a four-game skid and in fourth in the AL Central, having been swept by the Rangers, and the Rays came in on a season-best four-game win streak.
Rays: RHP Matt Andriese, back in the rotation with the trade of Matt Moore, will make his first start since June 10.
