While most young adults are still barred from Election Day booths and ballot boxes, the Teen Choice Awards didn’t shy away from politics during last night’s (July 31) show.

Alba called victims of gun violence from Newtown, San Bernardino and the Orlando Pulse nightclub shooting to the stage, but Grimmie, a popular online musician among teens, was not mentioned. No one can argue that Leonardo DiCaprio was worthy of a trophy for his Oscar-validated work in The Revenant, but Shailene Woodley earning an award for Choice Movie Actress: Action/Adventure in the reviled Allegiant was a little more unexpected.
She made sure to celebrate her win later on, sharing a fun Instagram video while telling her fans she is “forever grateful” to have been a part of The Force Awakens.

R’n’B singer Ne-Yo later joined the stage, paying tribute to the tragic victims as he sang Marvin Gaye’s hit What’s Going On. This was heartbreaking and we our prayers go out to those affected.
The speech marked the first time Timberlake has accepted an award since he apologized after responding to online backlash after writing that he was inspired by Jessie Williams’ speech at the BET Awards, where Williams spoke out about racial issues and cultural appropriation. It seems like just yesterday when we were blasting “Rock Your Body” and crying a river.
