Extra day likely at PGA Championship as storms end round three early

The only problem is neither of them played any golf on Saturday at Baltusrol Golf Club.

Leaders Jimmy Walker and Robert Streb, both nine under through 36 holes, are among 10 players yet to have teed off in round three. Streb became the 28th player to shoot a 63 in a major tournament.

They were at 131, matching the 36-hole record at the PGA Championship first set in 1983 by Hal Sutton at Riviera and last done by Jason Dufner in 2013 at Oak Hill.

“The course is playing to where you can fly 6, 7, 8 irons at the hole, it’s going to stop right there”, Mickelson said. “But it was a great round”.

He hasn’t made a birdie at either of the closing par-5s in the two days. “I mean, I’ve been in these situations before, not in a major”.

“I’d love to play golf like I did (in the first round) every day and I’d love to putt like I did (in the second) every day”. “I thought I’d make the cut when I birdied the fourth, at least got my first birdie of the week, and kept going from there”.

Play was halted at 2:14 p.m. when storms moved into the Springfield area. The course sits next to Baltusrol mountain, a ridge line that runs near the course and creates what locals call the “mountain effect.” Putts often break away from the ridge, creating something of an optical illusion to players.

WOBURN, England (AP) – Thailand’s Ariya Jutanugarn took the Women’s British Open lead at tree-lined Woburn, almost four months after blowing a late lead in the first major championship of the year.

Back-to-back birdies on the par-fives at 17 and 18 lifted the world number three to four-under for the day and the tournament, but he gave a stroke back to finish with a 67 for a three-under 137 total.

“It felt pretty good the last 12 or 13 holes”, Stenson said.

“Obviously the rain is going to soften up the golf course, so you’ve got to be a little bit aggressive out there”. Fortunately for me, the back side was nice.

The cut came at 2-over 142.

The last time the PGA was held at Baltusrol, it had a rain delayed Monday finish with Phil Mickelson winning the title. It represented an enormous turnaround for Mickelson from missing the cut at this year’s Masters and U.S. Open, but he also raised his own expectations as a result.

In a press conference, the PGA of America’s Kerry Haigh, who leads the championship, was peppered with questions about the PGA’s handling of the weather situation. He was tied for second with Emiliano Grillo of Argentina.

“I wanted this my whole life”.

“It’s a major championship and we certainly try, and look at starting from one tee whenever we can”, he said. I hit the right shots at the right time and any of the (bad) shots I did hit didn’t do me any harm.
