Jeanpierre, Nowak battle for Seahawks center job

As teammate K.J. Wright, who signed a $27 million, four-year contract extension in December, said while discussing Chancellor’s holdout last week: “We are trying to make this last for our grandkids”. That means the 27-year-old is now facing penalties up to $330,000, plus the possibility of losing, at most, 25 percent of this season’s $1 million signing bonus if he doesn’t report by the end of training camp. But fines are at team discretion and often waived once a player reports.

An eventful return today for the Seahawks from a day off from practice here in Renton.

Bailey’s rise – and Carroll gushing after practice how no one can deny how productive Bailey has been in the last few days – felt like an underline to the coach stating how the team is moving on without Chancellor.

“I don’t know the parameters”, coach Pete Carroll said before the players took Sunday off from practice. “But there’s still stuff to be talked out”. Chancellor still has three years left on his deal but with all the contract restructuring that has gone on with the Seahawks he saw this as an opportunity to make more money.

When asked if he was surprised by Chancellor’s holdout, Carroll added: “No, because he’s very strong minded”. The toll that takes on his body could shave some years off his playing career, which is likely why he wants more guaranteed money now. Free safety Steven Terrell got most of the reps in place of Earl Thomas, who watched from the sidelines as he continues his recovery from off-season shoulder surgery. “That’s why they had him do that”, Carroll said of his successors as USC on Lane Kiffin’s staff playing Bailey at linebacker. He provided a highlight Monday when he intercepted a pass in the end zone. “So he can probably play about 30 or 40 plays in the opener”, Carroll said. He is a phenomenal football player.

“Rolling down on the run is not a big deal to him”. “I really think I have progressed a lot”. Following his release, he signed with the Seahawks and was a guard on the practice squad last season.

“About the center thing, it’s still very competitive”. “Drew is a little bit ahead right now”.

Undrafted rookie wide receiver Kasen Williams, who joined the team more than a month later than everyone else, in late June, starred for the second consecutive day. The coaches like how Nowak doesn’t get moved back, and his knowledge of the overall line play.

Carroll, meanwhile, effusively praised Nowak for his smarts, strength and versatility.

“He’ll come back real strong (this) week. He also has good instincts in the throwing game”. “Even though he’s been on the other side of the ball”.

Practices can only show so much.

NFL insiders and Seahawks fans seem divided.

Now Nowak is getting similar treatment. “So it’s just great to see him”.

His answer showed just how unsettled the position is. So after practice we did it about four or five times.

How much longer will they do it without Chancellor? “He would get the first snaps, but they would be rotating probably in the first quarter of the game”. Carroll has no timetable for when he names a starter.
