Victims in Central Texas balloon crash identified
The balloon traveled about 8 miles from takeoff to crash.

The first power line trip was at 7:42 a.m., and the first call to 911 was a minute later.
However, Heart of Texas Hot Air Balloon Rides is suspending operations in light of the “unspeakable tragedy”, according to a post on the company’s website.
But it’s still not clear whether a fire that broke out on the balloon happened before it collided with the power lines or was caused by the power lines, the NTSB said.
NTSB member Robert Sumwalt says ground crew members will be interviewed starting today.
Lunsford said that the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board are going to the scene to investigate.
A Missouri police officer, though, told the AP that Nichols was arrested there in 2000 on a felony driving-while-intoxicated charge.
“The FAA has not responded in an affirmative way”, she told CNN’s Sara Ganim on Saturday.
Josh Rowan said the two, both 34, grew up in College Station. They are classifying this as a “major accident” due to the “significant loss of life”.
Lorilee Brabson and her daughter Paige moved to Texas a few years ago from Colorado Springs.
He was a professor and burns treatment researcher and she had a five-year-old son. “He was excited every day”.
He said that no previous complaints against the business had been safety-related.
Sumwalt is urging anyone who witnessed the crash or has related video to contact the NTSB. “Not only the cloud cover, visibility and the winds, but we will also be looking at the temperature to see if the conditions might have created a density altitude”, said Sumwalt.
Lockhart is about 30 miles south of Austin.
Nichols’ ex-girlfriend Wendy Bartch told the AP that he was a recovering alcoholic; however, she said he had been sober for at least four years and never flew a balloon after drinking.
Hersman added, “Unfortunately in aviation, they say that the lessons are often written in blood, and it takes more than one event for an action to occur”.
Right now, commercial balloon operators don’t need those letters of authorization – but commercial helicopter and airplane operators do. He was described by friends and neighbors as a longtime balloon operator with a love of floating high above the Texas landscape.
In 2013, 19 people died in a hot air balloon crash in Egypt, near the ancient city of Luxor. He did not say the location of the balloon launch. The woman said Nichols would repeatedly cancel rides “even when the weather appeared calm and sunny”, according to the bureau. He said several passengers seemed to be related.
Depending on sponsorships and pilot availability, there are always 20 to 30 hot air balloon participants each year, with a record of 39 that took place in 2005.
The Better Business Bureau of Missouri previously warned customers away from doing business with pilot Alfred “Skip” Nichols.
Heart of Texas Hot Air Balloon Rides is not accredited by the BBB and has a D+ rating.
Missouri court records show that Nichols in 2013 settled a personal injury lawsuit filed by one of eight passengers in a balloon that crash-landed in suburban St. Louis.
Authorities would not confirm the exact number of deaths from Saturday’s crash, but Lynn Lunsford with the FAA said the balloon was carrying at least 16 people and the Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement that it didn’t look like anyone survived.
Paige got her mom the balloon ride as a Mother’s Day gift.

Paul Cantu, manager at the La Hacienda restaurant in San Antonio, told The Denver Post on Monday that Paige Brabson had been employed at the business. But the incident is likely to spark debate over how balloon operators are regulated and what can be done to prevent accidents. Bryant said the manufacturer of Nichols’ balloon mandates an annual inspection, and that the state of Texas does not inspect or regulate them. However, Cannon said there is no oversight of that reporting.
