CAS: Two Russian swimmers appeal Rio ban

The International Weightlifting Federation [IWF] has followed athletics lead and imposed a blanket ban on the Russian weightlifting team.

Russia’s weightlifting team was barred on Friday from participating in the Rio Olympics due to doping.

“They should have chose to permit all athletes with spotless reputation (to the Games, )” he said, specifically referring to Oleg Chen and David Berdzhanyan.

The IWF said a reanalyses of the urine samples of eight Russian weightlifters showed seven used performance-enhancing drugs.

On Monday, swimming’s world governing body FINA banned both, along with their Russian compatriot Daria Ustinova, because their names appeared in Canadian law professor Richard McLaren’s damning report.

The panel will examine each case individually and make the “final decision” before Friday, IOC spokesman Mark Adams said late on Saturday. It is not yet known when this will be announced however.
