Cory Gardner rebukes Trump on Khan fight – but not by name

“I can not emphasize enough how deeply I disagree with Mr. Trump’s statement”, McCain added.

“Whether you’ve served or not, how can anyone’s heart be so devoid of love that they’d slander a gold star mom?” wrote Kander, who served as a military intelligence officer in Afghanistan.

“We already knew that Donald Trump was intolerant and unfit to be Commander in Chief”.

Johnson, who is locked in a tight re-election contest with Democrat Russ Feingold, issued a statement Monday praising the Khan family but not mentioning Trump – a move the Feingold campaign criticized.

In a scathing and lengthy statement issued Monday, the Arizona Republican waded into the dispute between his party’s controversial nominee and Khizr and Ghazala Khan, whose son, Army Captain Humayun Khan, was killed by a bomb in Iraq in 2004.

Among Trump’s most recent comments was a Tweet sent Monday claiming he was “viciously attacked” by the Kahns.

Trump appeared at the VFW’s convention in North Carolina last week and later boasted of getting a warmer reception than Clinton, but Duffy said “the VFW will not tolerate anyone berating a Gold Star family member for exercising his or her right of speech or expression”.

It’s just the latest Trump-created conundrum for Republican senators who need support from Trump’s enthusiastic backers to win re-election, but risk alienating moderate Republicans, independents, minorities and women if they embrace the GOP nominee too enthusiastically.

Sen. John McCain said Monday that Donald Trump’s comments about the family of a slain Muslim-American soldier don’t reflect the views of the Republican Party. “I’ve had tremendous success”, he said.

During an interview Sunday on the ABC news program “This Week” with George Stephanopoulos, Trump suggested Khan’s wife may have stood silently beside her husband because she was not allowed to speak. Trump was taken aback by the uproar, believing he was attacked first by Khan, according to a person familiar with the candidate’s thinking who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly about private conversations.

Mike Pence, have clarified via social media that Humayun Khan “is an American hero and that his family, like every Gold Star family, is deserving of our respect”. “No, he should go back to NY”. Ted Cruz in Wisconsin’s primary – and they have also previously criticized Trump over comments he’s made questioning the fairness of a judge because of his Hispanic heritage and his proposal to temporary ban Muslims from entering the country.

It is disturbing that Donald Trump is unable to graciously recognize the sacrifice and loss of the Khans, whose son, Army Capt. Humayun Khan, died in Iraq 12 years ago in defense of his fellow soldiers.

In an open letter, 23 Gold Star families said Trump cheapened their sacrifice and called for an apology.

In fact, Khan said, he keeps a stack of pocket-sized Constitutions at his home to give to guests and to strike up conversation.

In Twitter messages, other Republicans joined McCain in condemning Trump. We have radical Islamic terrorists coming in that have to be stopped.

“When Donald Trump is talking about Islam, he is ignorant”.

“It’s just who he is”, said Stuart Jolly, a former campaign staffer and current national political director for the pro-Trump Great America PAC.

Veterans of Foreign Wars, the largest USA war veterans group, heaped scorn on Trump’s “out of bounds” criticism of a fallen soldier’s mother.

She said she emailed the Khans after the Democratic National Convention speech, telling them how fearless they were. “She probably, maybe she wasn’t allowed to have anything to say”. “Every day, whenever I pray, I have to pray for him, and I cry”, she wrote.
