McCain and other Republican leaders have said that Humayun Khan sacrificed for his country, and his family doesn’t deserve to be questioned by Trump. Speaker Paul Ryan was slightly more forceful: “Many Muslim Americans have served valiantly in our military, and made the ultimate sacrifice”. It was, and is, a lot to process, and the complexity of the situation has driven people to revisit the basics: Who is Khizr Khan, and how did he and his family come to be such a public example of American values?
