Marlins place Cascade native Rea on disabled list

Dietrich’s pinch-hit triple off Matt Bowman sent Adeiny Hechavarria racing home from first for a 5-4 win that boosted the Marlins to one game ahead of the Cardinals for the second wild-card spot in the National League.

But after striking out Jedd Gyorko to open the fourth inning, Rea immediately gave a subtle wave with his glove toward the dugout to summon the trainer.

Although the Marlins would go on to a 11-0 romp against the Cardinals, it was a deflating moment for the ballclub. Matt Boyd allowed four hits in five innings, but two were homers that accounted for three Astros runs. “I was trying to eat up as much as I could”.

Marlins manager Don Mattingly said all of that was why he lifted Cashner after 82 pitches. The one thing I always say about the Cardinals is they not show up at times and Saturday was one of those times in an 11-0 defeat at Miami. “It’s just unfortunate. Just hope everything works out”. “We still haven’t done anything yet, just kind of waiting right now”.

The Marlins (57-48) split the four-game series with the Cardinals (56-49) and also split their 10-game homestand.

In Los Angeles, Yasmani Grandal’s RBI single capped a five-run, seventh-inning rally that carried the Dodgers past Arizona. He struck out five and walked none in a no-decision.

Rea initially felt a pain in his arm during warmups before the game, but tried to pitch through it.

“That ball has got to be caught”, he said.

“It just boils down to making pitches for me – just stay down in the zone and let the defense work”. Sometimes you’ve got to throw through it. “We’ve lost a couple of important games for us but there’s nothing we can do about it now”, he said.

Rea had some elbow trouble late last season, but said, “It’s a little different”.

Though he didn’t get a hit, the 42-year-old Ichiro made an impact on defense. Johnson was charged with an error on the play. The Cardinals’ Greg Garcia led off the third with a solo homer to center.

Rea was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a right elbow sprain less than a day after his debut with the Marlins was limited to a brief, yet effective, 3 1/3 innings. Now the Marlins are rumored to be back in the trade market in an attempt to land another starter prior to Monday’s non-waiver trading deadline.

Of the two former Padres, Cashner is more of a known quantity with big-league experience stretching to 2010.

Cardinals: RHP Adam Wainwright (9-5, 4.16) is scheduled to start Tuesday at Cincinnati against Dan Straily (6-6, 3.84).

Rea sat alone in the unfamiliar home clubhouse before most of his new teammates arrived.

Rea was obtained from the San Diego Padres on Friday. Collin McHugh (7-7) lasted only 1 2/3 innings and was roughed up for 10 hits and the Tigers’ first eight runs.

Andrew Cashner allowed one earned run in six innings in his Marlins debut.

Marcell Ozuna hit a two-run home run and Martin Prado had a two-run double for the Marlins.

Mathis had three hits and drove in two runs.

Miami added three runs in the sixth.
