While Nottingham Forest look set to add Pajtim Kasami to their ranks before Saturday’s opener with Burton, clubs in the second tier are busy themselves.

According to reports from Sky Sports, Newcastle United are in transfer talks with Aston Villa star Ciaran Clark after activating his £5million release clause.

Clark, who had previously been linked with a move to West Brom, is on the verge of leaving Aston Villa for their Championship promotion rivals, despite the new Villa boss Roberto Di Matteo saying last week the player will remain at the club. “He will be staying with us”.

The 29-year-old was pictured at a hospital while undergoing a medical.

Newcastle and Rafa don’t appear to be planning to stay in the Championship for long.

The Fulham striker who was so prolific last season, netting 21 times, has been the subject of strong interest from Norwich and Sheffield Wednesday throughout the summer. For the latter two to snub the chance of Premier League football to head to St James’s Park is evidence of the club’s ambition.

The 26-year-old has four years left on his contract in the midlands, but has a release clause in said contract worth just £5m.

Hull City midfielder Mohamed Diame, 29, is also on Tyneside.
