26-year-old McIlroy doesn’t have to commit to the PGA Championship until his official tee time for the opening round.

The 97th PGA Championship, held this year at the links-style Whistling Straits in Kohler, Wisconsin, starts on Thursday.
“To go back on a soccer pitch, it wouldn’t be quite ready, but to do what I need to do this week, it’s 100 per cent”.
“Hopefully I can get off my butt and get into the top 100 (in the FedEx Cup standings) and play the event”, he said this week. Just back from injury, Rory McIlroy hopes to defend his title, while Jordan Spieth looks for his third major victory this season after missing out on a playoff at the British Open by about 6 inches. Spieth won the Masters and U.S. Open already and he finished fourth at the British Open.
Spieth, who says his failure to make it three straight major titles at St. Andrews in July has only stoked his appetite, could still join Ben Hogan and Tiger Woods as the only players to win three majors in the same year.
McIlroy could lose his world No 1 ranking to Masters and US Open champion Spieth this week as well as his lead in the European Tour’s Race to Dubai.
But he’s living in the now and ready to attack Whistling Straits.

If soreness or swelling was a problem, McIlroy didn’t show it in successive practice rounds Sunday and Monday.

Oosthuizen, 32, will certainly be one of the players to watch this week at Whistling Straits, and not only for a swing regarded as among the sweetest in the game.

One of the many things I love about the PGA Championship is it allows juniors ages 17 or younger in free with an accompanying adult. I think I appreciate it more now that I’m working for Sky Sports, and because I don’t get a chance to play very often these days.

– Rory McIlroy walked with the usual boyish bounce in his step. One of the others includes Long Islander Matt Dobyns, the Fresh Meadow Country Club head pro and reigning PGA Professional National Champion, with Colin Montgomerie and John Daly. Maybe on Thursday and Friday he could be a little rusty, that happens after a six-week lay-off – particularly in the short-game and the “feel” shots.
