The BJP-led government is likely to come under sharp protests from BSP and Congress over issues surrounding former BJP leader Dayashankar’s remark against BSP leader Mayawati and continued Kashmir unrest. “The entire party, especially the Prime Minister, are all for development and progress of Dalits and the marginalised”, rued a state BJP General Secretary, admitting that Daya Shankar Singh had in one stroke undone a lot of work done in cultivating the Dalit vote.

Madhya Pradesh Assembly on Thursday witnessed ruckus as BSP MLAs protested the derogatory remarks against their party chief Mayawati questioning her character by Dayashankar Singh and sought his arrest, forcing the Speaker to adjourn the House twice during the Question Hour.

The protesters threw traffic out of gear in Hazratganj, giving anxious moments to the district administration, police officers and those controlling traffic.

Union Finance Minister Minister Arun Jaitley expressing regret and Singh being relieved of all party posts was “some solace” but this was not enough, Jayalalithaa said. BSP leaders, led by Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Council Naseemuddin Siddiqui, had submitted the complaint at the Hazratganj Kotwali. Expulsion from the party will remain in force for six years in line with the party’s rules, BJP leaders said. “It is highly condemnable that a political leader uses such words against a prominent woman leaders. Such a person (Dayashankar) should be sent to jail immediately”, she said during the protest.

Siddiqui, however, yesterday refused to express any regret, saying he or his party workers didn’t say anything “obscene” or “objectionable” during their protest against the expelled BJP leader on Thursday. “I associate our dignity with yours and stand with you”, Jaitley said in Rajya Sabha. Later, Dayashankar Singh did render an apology for his blasphemous comments.
