Qualcomm refreshes its mid-range and entry level line; launches Snapdragon 616

Instead there are customers out there who might have to settle for low or mid-range devices, but fret not because Qualcomm’s got you covered. These new system on chips will replace Snapdragon 615, 410 and 210 SoCs respectively.

For those who are looking forward to potentially improved low-mid range phones, Qualcomm expects that these new chipsets will make their way into smartphones either later this year or early 2016. Also, it will be supporting X5 LTE for up to Cat 4 speeds.

The Snapdragon 212 remains a 28nm quad-core ARM Cortex processor with a new top clock speed of up to 1.3GHz per core (up from 1.1GHz in the 210). It’s still the same Cortex-A53, meaning 64-bit.

Other specs are the same as for last year’s model, including Adreno 306 graphics, support for 1920 x 1200 pixel displays, 13.5MP cameras, Quick Charge 2.0, 802.11n WiFi, Bluetooth 4.1, and an integrated X5 global modem.

The Snapdragon 212 is naturally less powerful.

The Snapdragon 820 is expected to feature a 64-bit architecture, a Hydra CPU that’s 35 percent faster than the Snapdragon 810, and a A350 GPU that’s 40 percent faster than its predecessor.

While smartphone enthusiasts are waiting for Qualcomm to drop the beastly Snapdragon 820 flagship processor, those with more humble aspirations (and lighter wallets) may be more interested in how budget processors are coming along. The chip maker has not yet announced any time line for the chip’s market availability, though if they have already been available to hardware customers for a while, we could see some devices sporting these chips come IFA 2015 next month.
