Director general John Tibbetts warned the Grand Cayman and sister islands to expect heavy rainfall and strong winds from this evening.
This system is no threat to any land areas. Hundreds of flights were canceled.
The storm, pictured at about 5:30 p.m. Monday, is headed west over Jamaica and will likely pass south of the Cayman Islands.
While noting that the NHC continues to refer to the system as a Tropical Wave, Mr. Thompson said based on features of the satellite imagery, they would have determined that the system has developed beyond this stage. All three of those countries issued tropical storm warnings for some areas, and a hurricane warning was issued for part of Mexico.
In the Pacific, Tropical Storm Howard will weaken as it heads north of the Hawaiian Islands.
Service of Jamaica has advised that a tropical storm warning remains in effect for Jamaica, as a strong tropical wave makes its way across the island.
The hurricane center said that environmental conditions favor the storm intensifying and that a tropical storm will “likely form later today”.
The Royal Cayman Islands Police Service (RCIPS) Joint Marine Unit also issued a statement and “strongly recommended” that boating activities be suspended due to tropical storm conditions developing across the region. “Data from the National Hurricane Center is showing winds of 40 to 45 miles per hour in the northern section of the system,”.
