DC Metro Cop Arrested for Allegedly Trying to Assist ISIS

He is first police officer in the United States arrested and charged with supporting ISIS.

A D.C. Metro Transit cop has been arrested on charges that he tried to help ISIS, according to a Department of Justice statement.

Nicholas Young was part of the Metro Transit Police Department for 12 years.

According to an indictment filed in Alexandria federal court, Young was convinced by an undercover FBI officer to send him codes for mobile messaging cards.

According to the Washington Post, Young has been on an Federal Bureau of Investigation watchlist since 2010.

Documents show Young has been under surveillance since 2010, and that he traveled to Libya twice in 2011, where he said he joined rebel forces seeking to oust dictator Moammar Gadhafi.

He posed no credible threat to the Metro system, U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia spokesman Joshua Stueve told NBC News.

Young has a court appearance scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday. He faces as much as 20 years in prison if he is convicted.
