Imminent arrival of ‘top-class’ Pogba gets Rooney excited

Sir Alex Ferguson believes Wayne Rooney could have excelled “in any era” and has compared the Manchester United captain to club legend Sir Bobby Charlton.

The Paul Pogba to Manchester United transfer saga has been among the longest and most high-profile ones this summer.

He added in an interview with the Daily Mail: “It’s not just the new signings, we’ve got Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford from last season who made such an impact”.

United, who ended their previous campaign on the fifth place, will begin their Premier League title challenge against Bournemouth on August 14. So, if he comes, I’m looking forward to that again!

Rooney was quoted, “I’d say there are two that stand out and they’re Paul Scholes and Cristiano Ronaldo”.

The Swede scored on his debut for United in a friendly against Galatasaray last week and could make his first appearance at Old Trafford tonight in Rooney’s testimonial against Everton.

Rooney also named some of his most challenging opponents in each position, saying: “There’s been so many over the years but I’ll try and pick one for each position”.

Rooney feels that Mourinho’s plans should give him the freedom he enjoys and have led to a switch in his mentality.

Wayne Rooney’s testimonial between Manchester United and Everton this evening is likely to be an emotional occasion for the England striker.

And Ferguson revealed that he wanted to sign Rooney at least two years before he eventually did, failing twice to bring him away from then-Everton manager – and later United boss – David Moyes.

‘I think he’s had a fantastic career. “I’m absolutely happy to be one of the guys beside him”.

“But Jose has come in, he has seen me play in another position for 10 years scoring goals, and that’s what he wants me to do”.

“I had seen him on TV but to see him up close in training and then start playing with him, you realise that the boy is a bit special”.
