Box office recap: ‘Jason Bourne’ knocks out ‘Star Trek’ for top spot

As a sign of Damon’s appeal, audience surveys reveal that the actor’s presence above-the-title was the second most frequently cited reason for turning up to see Jason Bourne. Nerve is an app-based game that’s all the rage among the kids.

Universal’s “Jason Bourne”, once again starring Matt Damon as the titular hero, earned 60 million USA dollars from 4,026 locations in its debut weekend, according to estimated figures released by comScore on Sunday.

The new comedy “Bad Moms“, which stars Mila Kunis, Kristen Bell, and Kathryn Hahn, came in third, grossing more than $23 million.

“Jason Bourne” dominated the foreign box office, opening to $50.1 million, the biggest overseas debut in the history of the action franchise.

It took over $120 million to produce “Jason Bourne” that boasts a stellar collection of $11.2 million in South Korea and $10.2 million in the United Kingdom, second to “Finding Dory” with a grossing of $10.8 million.

Matt Damon put James Corden through his paces as his Jason Bourne stunt double in a new sketch for The Late Late Show – with pretty hilarious consequences. But, as noted in yesterday’s report, this isn’t particularly an issue with Bad Moms so much as it is a testament to the staying power of Star Trek Beyond, which held steady at No. 2 with $24 million to pass the $100 million mark in its second weekend. The film has grossed over 105.7 million dollars in 10 days of releasing. The irreverent comedy under performed as studio expectations were predicting $30 million for its opening weekend.

Rounding out the top five for the weekend: The animated hit “The Secret Life of Pets” came in fourth behind “Bad Moms“, taking in $18.2 million in its fourth weekend, bringing its total to $296 million. It earned $9m over the weekend for an eighth-place finish. With these three movies there was something for everyone, even as this was also the second weekend for Star Trek Beyond, Lights Out and Ice Age: Collision Course, which means there was plenty of competition at the box office. “This is the late summer push that we’ve all been hoping for”.

Final numbers are expected Monday.
