‘Star Trek Beyond’ wins at box office

Star Trek Beyond has just topped weekend box office receipts.

If the film can conquer China – not unlike how “Terminator: Genisys” and “Warcraft” were saved overseas – then “Star Trek” will safely continue its four-decade cinematic mission. Globally it stands at $323.7M.

The series debuting in 2017 will be called “Star Trek: Discovery”. With an estimated $21 million opening, the opposite is true for $105 million-costing Ice Age: Collision Course. This film is far more about the foreign numbers than most. Lights Out exceeded all expectations, after costing studio Warner Bros just $5m to make.

The upcoming Star Trek CBS on-demand drama officially has a name.

Simon Pegg, Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, and John Cho return for the latest Paramount and Skydance film.

The latest Ice Age sequel, Collision Course, rounds out the new top five at five, after failing to cause much disruption in the box office chart with a disappointing $21 million (£16 million) debut.

In North America, the film got a lift from Imax screenings, earning 8.4 million dollars from 387 locations. The 13th movie in the franchise obtained mostly positive feedback.

“Pets” was the second-most-popular film at theaters, adding an additional $29.3 million to its stellar $260 million earnings to date. The reboot has now earned $86.9-M domestically.

Sony’s Ghostbusters reboot fell to fifth place with £16.1 million in its second weekend, bringing its domestic total to £66 million.

With 313 theaters and a very targeted audience (me!), the Absolutely Fabulous film landed with a $1.8 million debut, which is definitely respectable – something that you won’t find these lovely ladies accused of all too often. Paramount also reported that about 14 percent of the motion picture’s opening weekend gross was made from approximately 387 IMAX locations for the global IMAX haul of $11.6 million.

It knocked The Secret Life of Pets off its throne, which occupied the top-spot for two weekends in a row.

Still, some executives are hopeful that “Star Trek Beyond’s” relative success coupled with upcoming releases such as “Jason Bourne” and “Suicide Squad” will galvanize the domestic marketplace.
