The prime minister also called for the “verification of security” on aircraft and ships entering the country.

A ministry statement issued late Tuesday said Japan’s annual defense report was “full of lousy cliches, makes irresponsible remarks on China’s normal and legal national defense and military development (and) hypes up the East and South China Sea issues”.

– June 22: The U.S. and South Korea say North Korea fires two suspected Musudan missiles. North Korea later says it has developed a new large-caliber artillery rocket system that boosts its ability to attack the South.

“This provocation only serves to increase the global community’s resolve to counter (North Korea’s) prohibited activities”, said Pentagon spokesman Gary Ross.

South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said the missiles were launched toward waters off North Korea’s east coast at 7.50 a.m. local time.

It was the first time a North Korean missile has been fired direct into Japanese waters. A North Korean missile in 1998 landed in Japan’s EEZ in the Pacific Ocean after having flown over the country’s territory. Outsiders believe North Korea intends the launches and tests to display its arsenal and its ability to attack rival South Korea and USA military bases in Asia in reaction to a US plan to deploy an advanced military defense system in the South by the end of 2017.

That came just days after Washington and Seoul announced an agreement to deploy the US Terminal High Altitude Area Defence, or THAAD, system in South Korea by the end of next year – a move condemned by Pyongyang and also vehemently opposed by China and Russian Federation.

The Rodong is a scaled-up Scud variant with a maximum range of around 1,300 kilometres.

Since its fourth nuclear test, North Korea has claimed a series of technical breakthroughs for its weapons programme.

“Our commitment to the defense of our allies, including the Republic of Korea and Japan, in the face of these threats, is ironclad”, Ross said on Wednesday. About 28,500 US troops are stationed in South Korea and tens of thousands of more in Japan.

South Korean Foreign Minister Yun Byung-Se said Wednesday’s missile test only served to “underline the need to deploy THAAD”. North Korea describes the drills as an invasion rehearsal.
