Tropical Storm Earl has formed in the western Caribbean

All three of those countries issued Tropical Storm warnings for some areas, and a hurricane watch was issued for part of the Mexican coast. According to the NHC, the tropical storm is passing south of Jamaica and is moving rapidly westward at about 20 miles per hour toward the northwestern Caribbean Sea.

At 11 a.m., the center of Earl was located about 215 miles south southeast of Grand Cayman and 535 miles east of Belize City.

“On the forecast track, the center of Earl will be moving very close to the north coast of Honduras late tonight and Wednesday and [will] approach Belize and the Yucatan peninsula late Wednesday”, the NHC said in a Facebook post.

“Tropical storm conditions are expected to read the coast of Honduras by late [Tuesday]. and will reach Mexico and Belize by Wednesday night”, reads an except from a statement by the National Hurricane Center (NHC) issued Tuesday afternoon.

Before officially becoming a named storm, it hit the Dominican Republic, killing 6 people, the Weather Channel reported.

“Storm surge will raise water levels by as much as 0.5 to 1 metre above normal tide levels along the immediate coast of Belize and the eastern Yucatan Peninsula to the north where the centre makes landfall”.

Earl poses no threat to the U.S. Note that impacts (particularly heavy rain, high surf, coastal flooding) with any tropical cyclone may spread beyond its forecast path.

Southern Quintana Roo state is bracing for the arrival of Tropical Storm Earl, which continues to gain strength and may landfall there and in neighboring Belize as a hurricane early Thursday Aug. 4.

The storm struck the Dominican Republic on Sunday, knocking down power lines and starting a fire that killed six passengers on a bus returning from a beach excursion. Near the coast, that storm surge will be accompanied by unsafe, large waves.
