Obama Praises Gold Star Families Amid Trump Firestorm

And a group of Gold Star families demanded an apology from Trump in an open letter published published overnight. But not all Americans know the term, which is important to military families. These relatives can be parents, sons, daughters, brothers, sisters or other loved ones. Khizr Khan told delegates that, “If it were up to Donald Trump”, his son Humayun, who died in Iraq protecting his fellow soldiers, “never would have been in America”.

President Barack Obama addressed the Disabled American Veterans’ annual conference in Atlanta on Monday. Eleven Gold Star families wrote a letter slamming Trump’s comments.

Trump, who has tweeted that Mr. Khan “viciously” attacked him, answered Khizr Khan’s challenge that he had not sacrificed anything for his country by discussing his business career.

Trump continued his response Monday on Twitter.

Earlier this week, Ayotte said she was “appalled” at Trump’s comments but still plans to vote for the GOP nominee.

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) joined the fray Monday morning, issuing a strongly worded statement ripping his party’s nominee.

During his speech on Monday, the president said the audience members at the DAV conference had a unique understanding of the sacrifices of our nation’s veterans and service-members.

She said she emailed the Khans after the Democratic National Convention speech, telling them how fearless they were.

The Koprinces became a Gold Star family and they say it’s painful to hear families, just like them, are being discussed in the election.
