Health claims of flossing often unproven

However, there seems to be little proof that flossing actually prevents cavities or gum disease, as has always been believed.

Since 1979, flossing has been recommended in the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, which is updated every five years.

Now, the AP is questioning whether the US government’s guidelines on flossing, as per the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, are based on scientific evidence, and whether they need to be revised. In a letter to the AP, the government acknowledged the effectiveness of flossing had never been researched, as required. Out of 25 studies he reviewed on the subject, almost all said that the benefits of regular flossing were minimal.

Wayne Aldredge, president of the American Academy of Periodontology, acknowledges the weak scientific evidence.

Aldredge says that it’s necessary to look at patients over a 10 to 20 year period because gun disease is a very slow process. But no. We’re busy people with little to no time for much more than brushing our teeth let alone flossing.

He added that “more sophisticated trials” were needed.

“If you have any specific concerns with regard to gum health, your dentist or hygienist will be able to provide advice on the most appropriate methods to suit your individual needs” he said.

Are you still buying the benefits of flossing?

The new announcement came about after journalists at the AP news agency asked America’s health agencies for evidence that flossing did any good. It also said there was “weak, very unreliable evidence” from 10 of those studies that flossing could help reduce plaque after one or three months, and that none of the studies could prove flossing prevents tooth decay. You should be moving the floss up and down the sides of the teeth instead of in a sawing motion. “Meanwhile, the risk of not recommending flossing is relatively high …”

“Interdental cleaning is proven to help remove debris between teeth that can contribute to plaque build-up”. Until we know more, your call is probably as good as anyone’s, so do whatever seems to work for you.
