Democracy Now!’s Aaron Maté spoke with mourners as they filed into the Friendly Temple Missionary Baptist Church. Another woman nearby fainted. Only 4 percent say they see no problem. McGuire’s statement said the department was “working as quickly as possible to get details of the incident”.

A string of US police killings of black suspects since the shooting has triggered an outpouring of anger at perceived police racism and prompted calls for change.

He said said a lot of families in the St Louis area and across the US are hurting because they have lost loved ones to police violence. Two doves were released at the end.

Hundreds of people marched, prayed and observed minutes of silence in Ferguson, Missouri on Sunday to mark the anniversary of the shooting death of an unarmed black teenager by a white police officer a year ago.

Bussey said she went to a few protests last August in the days after Brown’s death, but had not been involved in the rallies that have continued, on a smaller scale, since then.

Moving forward, Raimondo and O’Donnell said it’s important to be engaged in communities and build relationships to keep neighborhoods safe.

“As a parent I can imagine the pain of this time right now, this upcoming anniversary … and so I definitely have admiration for him, sympathy for him and his family and pray that God gives them the strength to make it through this weekend”. Otherwise, the crowd was peaceful.

But the department also said a separate investigation into Ferguson showed extensive evidence of a police force operating with extreme racial prejudice and a municipal court system exploiting blacks to generate city revenue.

But Monday, two groups are planning something that is not so family-friendly, a day of civil disobedience.

Marchers shouted slogans such as “Hands up, don’t shoot” and ‘We do this for who? And the business district that was at the center of last year’s sometimes-violent protests is slowly rebuilding.

Relatives and friends described Brown as a quiet, gentle giant who stood around 6-foot-3, weighed almost 300 pounds and was eager to start technical college. The march was scheduled to get just before noon at the site where Wilson gunned down Brown on August. 9, 2014. Moments later, he and a pal have been strolling on Canfield Drive when Wilson, who’s white, informed them to maneuver to the sidewalk.

Johnson said criticism breeds the kind of anti-police sentiment that led a gunman to ambush and fatally shoot New York Police Department Officers Wenjian Liu and Rafael Ramos in their patrol auto in December. But witnesses provided a sharply different account, saying Brown was shot with his arms up as he tried to flee the officer’s fire.

The Justice Division reached the identical conclusion in March, clearing Wilson.
