New movies this week in Milwaukee: Aug. 5-11

Suicide Squad, the latest movie in the DC universe, has received bad reviews despite the hype that preceded its release but director David Ayer says he is not anxious about it as he made the film for the fans. We decided that if you are bad, you are always redeemable.

Ayer took to Twitter yesterday to share a quote from Emiliano Zapata, one of the leaders of the Mexican Revolution. But they are not good role models for your toddler, and they will most likely frighten all but the hardiest of young children. If not for them, then for the poor sucker in the row in front of you whose enjoyment of the film will inevitably be affected by the presence of your mortified preschooler. I will never forget seeing Tim Burton’s “Batman” in theaters in 1989 and the audience clapping when Nicholson said his famous line, “Wait ’til they get a load of me”.

And the Australian beauty is thankful director David Ayer helped her and her castmates – who also include Will Smith, Jai Courtney, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, and Jared Leto – to bond as they are now “truly a squad”. But nothing – and I mean NOTHING – has been more obnoxious than hearing about Leto’s escapades as the Clown Prince of Gotham City.

Finally, one industry veteran is cited as saying Suicide Squad is going to have to make $750-800 million to break even.

Introducing the archvillain pic, Smith said: “I’ve made a lot of movies, and some of them you can’t even count as movies. We were joined at the hip”.

“David has this really interesting rehearsal period where he digs into your life, so the whole cast shares really deep stories about ourselves”, adds Will Smith. Of course, there are minor spoilers here – nothing too bad, mind you – but if you want to go in with a completely fresh slate, then it’d probably best best to turn back now.

“He actually had to stop us being so cuddly with each other, because he would find us hanging out together in one trailer in between filming”.

Now I know much of the decision here is based on pure business motive. I believe critics are being harder on the movie than the word-of-mouth folks will be.
