He said parliament would function after External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj disclosed her family’s financial transactions with former Indian Premier League (IPL) chief Lalit Modi, facing investigation by the Enforcement Directorate.

Hitting out at Sushma Swaraj in Lok Sabha, Gandhi said that “if she is so kind and concerned about the Lalit Modi, why did she do it secretly?”

The Opposition party, however, told the Government that it was not amused by the “politics of abuse” resorted to by BJP leaders and Union Ministers against Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi.

Yesterday, Congress threw the ball in the government’s court on the issue of smooth functioning of Parliament which largely remained paralysed over Lalit Modi and Vyapam issues, saying if it was interested in its running, then it will reach out to the opposition.

Commenting on Prime Minister Narendra Modi backing Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje and Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan during an election campaign rally in Bihar’s Gaya, Chowdhury stated that the Congress will go back to the public and let them decide. He completely ignores the fact that the future of thousands of people in Madhya Pradesh has been destroyed by his chief minister.

“The government’s plan to dilute environmental governance and tribal land rights is a serious threat to the welfare of adivasis”, Gandhi said in her statement on the occasion of global Day of World’s Indigenous People.

Even Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav, on Sonia’s insistence, asked his MPs to boycott the House. “This was promised to them and it is about time Government of India takes action and delivers the special status to Andhra Pradesh”, he said.

The Congress has been protesting inside as well as outside parliament ever since the monsoon session of parliament began on July 21 over Sushma Swaraj asking the British government to arrange travel documents for Lalit Modi. He was referring to the fact that Ms Swaraj said she had acted entirely on humanitarian considerations to enable Mr Lalit Modi to be present in Lisbon, Portugal where his wife Minal Modi was due to undergo a surgery for cancer on August 4 previous year.

Congress MPs have raised the issue in Parliament by displaying placards while raising their demand in the din.

Mahajan had called the meeting with representatives of all political parties to find a way out of the logjam in the lower house.
