Wade Miley: Miley limits Blue Jays to two runs in defeat

For the most part, Miley did that.

The only Blue Jays pitchers not charged with a run were Pedro Morales, who came in to replace Dickey in the fourth, Bo Schultz, who relieved Chavez in the sixth, and Joe Biagini, who pitched a clean ninth.

Thole led off the inning with a double and advanced to third on a fielder’s choice, sliding under the tag of Mariners third baseman Seager.

In the sixth, Josh Donaldson grounded into a double-play but it brought home Josh Thole from third base to put Toronto ahead 2-0.

Cruz erased an early one-run deficit with a grand slam in the third inning against Toronto knuckleballer R.A. Dickey. “Whether it was the zone or our guys not seeing it well, but that’s more than what we usually see”.

Blue Jays: RHP Aaron Sanchez (10-1, 2.87) starts the opener of a three-game series against San Diego on Monday.

Zunino was thrown out easily.

“It was a ball in the dirt”, Zunino said, “and I thought it was a good count for a breaking ball”. That was the Mariners’ only hit of the game.

Happ battled all afternoon – three times in the first four innings he allowed the lead off runner on base only to shut down the Mariners offence the rest of the way.

Every Mariner in the starting lineup had at least one hit. “Hopefully, that was the wake-up call we need”, said Cruz, who is 10-for-22 in his last six games and has 25 home runs this season.
