The Electoral commission issued a warning to those who did not apply for special votes not to try and go to voting stations until Wednesday.

IEC Chairperson Glen Mashinini was one of the first people to cast his vote in Johannesburg. Despite all these factors, our nation has been able to hold transparent, free and fair elections.

Moepya said reported disruptions at the Gauteng IEC results centre were related to large numbers of presiding officers delivering results and “frayed nerves” but had been resolved. “These elections are quite elaborate for the fact that they are municipal elections, taking place in every corner of the country”, the President said.

Over the last two days, special votes were cast across the country.

Security will remain highly visible, to ensure that no one is prevented from exercising their hard-won democratic right of voting or participating in any political process leading to the elections, Zuma said. “This election will not be possible without the commitment of all South Africans to our democracy and the principles underpinning it”. “They will be on duty until the 10th of August”, the President said.

These were mostly results for smaller local municipalities.

“We urge all 26 million registered voters across the length and breadth of our country to speak, give direction and refresh the mandate of the 3rd sphere of government through voting on 3 August 2016”.
