Bruce Feldman of Fox Sports reports that the Cal Bears have named Davis Webb, a graduate transfer from Texas Tech, the team’s starting quarterback for the 2016 season.

Cal was led each of the last three seasons by Jared Goff, who was the first overall pick of this spring’s National Football League draft, by the Los Angeles Rams.

On the first day of camp, offensive coordinator Jake Spavital said that Webb’s addition “upped everyone’s play in the entire quarterback room”, and that his knowledge of the offense – virtually the same one he ran in Lubbock under Spavital mentor Kliff Kingsbury – had given him an edge.

Webb was previously listed as a co-starter at QB alongside Ross Bowers and Chase Forrest, but Webb was considered the front-runner to win the job when he transferred to the school. He played in 23 games with 14 starts over his three campaigns at Texas Tech and threw for career totals of 5,557 yards and 46 touchdowns. Additionally, he is familiar with offensive coordinator Jake Spavital’s offense, because it runs numerous same plays Webb ran at Texas Tech, limiting his adjustment period. “My job now is to prepare my best each day and do my job on game day”. Webb played in 10 games with six starts and threw for 2,718 yards on 226-of-361 passing (62.6%) with 20 touchdowns and nine interceptions for a 139.1 passer efficiency rating. He also set seven Big 12 freshman records and four school marks for rookies. Goff improved every season and finished last season with career highs of 4,719 yards passing, a Pac-12 record 43 touchdown passes, 64.5 percent completion rate and a 161.3 passer rating.

Webb isn’t being mentioned among the top prospects at his position after attempting just 22 passes last season, but he has the size and arm talent to put himself firmly on the radar of scouts this year. The Golden Bears open the 2016 season on August 26 when they face off against Hawaii in Sydney, Australia.
