Reggie Bush joins Bills for first training camp night practice

Bush has totaled 5,493 rushing yards and 3,508 receiving yards in 10 National Football League seasons. Reggie said it felt good to be back playing football.

The capacity crowd at St. John Fisher College’s Growney Stadium had high expectations for Bush, the former Heisman Trophy victor and No. 2 draft pick. It happened while he was pushed out of bounds while returning a punt and lost his footing on the concrete before sliding into the padded wall of the stands. “And I would never-knock on wood-I never want to end my career like that, going out with that”. “Those were my initial thoughts”, he said.

Now in his 30s and coming off a long string of injuries (he hasn’t played a full 16-game season since 2012), Bush is unlikely to play a major role on offense. Explaining how enjoyable the game is playing under Ryan to Reggie Bush last month may have helped to convince the veteran running back to sign with the Bills.

“As I have previously commented, we are always looking to improve our roster”, general manager Doug Whaley said.

Bush also becomes a candidate to return punts for the Bills. With Detroit in 2013 he gained 1,006 yards, but then fell way off in 2014, and after moving to San Francisco previous year, he played only five games before suffering the knee injury.

“I don’t think he’s ready to be the every-down back like he used to be, but he doesn’t have to be here”. If they can get back into that groove again, they definitely make a run for the playoffs or at least be in the hunt. Now lets not get insane, I know the AFC East belongs to New England.

When healthy, Bush is a dynamic triple threat as a rusher, receiver and returner.

Bush also has played for the New Orleans Saints, Miami Dolphins and Detroit Lions.

But beyond taking hand-offs, the versatile Bush could address the Bills’ need for a kick returner on special teams.

“Hey, let’s be honest, that’s somewhere we want to be better at”, coach Rex Ryan said in assessing Buffalo’s return game after practice Monday.

Last year, Bills quarterbacks made 68 of their 437 total attempts (15.5%) behind the line of scrimmage. However, Bush occasionally appeared rusty with a drop in punt drills and a pass drop in team drills.

Bush has 5,493 career yards rushing, 470 receptions for 3,508 yards and 53 offensive touchdowns.

Backup Karlos Williams was suspended four games for violating the league’s substance abuse policy, and he was already drawing criticism for offseason weight issues. Rookie Jonathan Williams was arrested on a DWI charge a day earlier.
