Michael Phelps to carry US flag into Opening Ceremony at Rio Olympics

It will be his fifth Olympics since making his debut at the 2000 Games in Sydney, Australia.

Recently, Phelps was voted one of the six captains for the USA swim team, another honor he holds for the first time at the 2016 Games.

“To represent your country at the Games is an unbelievable experience, but to lead out Team GB will be an incredible honour, the biggest in sport”, Murray said.

Olympic champion Lochte was also beaten into third place in the 400m IM at the trials by newcomer Chase Kalisz and Jay Litherland, saying afterwards he had pulled his groin in the earlier heats. The 31-year-old will not be in action on the opening Saturday, however, with his first event likely to be the men’s 4×100 freestyle relay on Sunday.

In the U.S., Olympic broadcaster NBC is expecting huge ratings as races featuring Phelps and follow American phenom Katie Ledecky will dominate prime time.

“Just so you guys don’t beat me to death if I come back”, he went on.

“I think I’m at the point where whatever is left here I will be able to turn the page and say I was able to finish my career how I wanted to and for me that’s all that matters”, he added.
