Thailand’s Ariya Jutanugarn opened up a two-shot lead at the top after a six-under-par 66 in the third round.
Thailand’s Ariya Jutanugarn poses with her trophy after winning the Women’s British Open. The Women’s British Open was established by the Ladies’ Golf Union in 1976 and was meant to serve as the women’s equivalent of The Open Championship.
A fast start helped Jutanugarn jump out in front early with three birdies through five holes to get to 13-under par and never looked back. “I know like what I have to focus and the only thing I have to is like focus on what is under my control”.
“Today, the tee shot was a little bit hard”, Lee said.
“It’s in my locker”. However, things became interesting down the stretch as her lead was cut to a stroke.
“I really want to try to be relaxed before each shot”, she told BBC Sport. “The last few holes here I tried to be patient and to commit to my shots”.
Jutanugarn will become the first Thai to win a major tournament if she can protect her lead on Sunday.
Lee is aiming for the first major of her career.
“This is really important for me and for golf in Thailand”, said Jutanugarn, whose next stop is the Olympic Games in Rio. I just wanted to make one.
“So I’m very proud of myself”. Growing up I never thought I would be at the Olympics and this is probably the only chance I am going to get in my career. But she rebounded with a birdie at the par 3, 17 by draining a putt for almost 20-feet to take a two-stroke lead heading to the final hole.
Her difficulties allowed Lee to close the gap before the South Korean, who was also chasing her maiden major crown, encountered trouble at the 17.
Despite three birdies in her opening four holes, Matthew was unable to match the quality of her second-round 65 as she slipped off the pace.
“I really like the course”, Feng said.
Martin, the 2014 victor at Royal Birkdale, shot a 70.
That was my heart and my soul out there, Martin said. “That’s all I had”. I gave it everything I could..
It did not take her long to learn how to win and her first victory in the United States in May was followed immediately by two more in the next two weeks.
She said being in contention at both the ANA Inspiration and KPMG Women’s PGA Championship were both great learning experiences. “I can’t wait. I’m really excited about that”.
