India’s Sonia Gandhi has shoulder surgery after fall at campaign stop

The leader of India’s main opposition Congress party, Sonia Gandhi, has had surgery to fix a shoulder injury, doctors say. “All her health parameters are showing improvement and she is soon going to be shifted out of the ICU”, according to a health bulletin issued by Dr DS Rana, Chairman (Board of Management) of Sir Ganga Ram Hospital.

Gandhi was admitted to the Ganga Ram Hospital on Wednesday following fever, dehydration, high pressure and fracture and dislocation of shoulder bone, during a visit to Varanasi for a road show.

Gandhi was shifted to the Sir Gangaram Hospital last afternoon from the Army Research and Referral Hospital, where she was rushed soon after her arrival from Varanasi around midnight on Tuesday.

Reports say she is likely to be discharged in a week.

Gandhi, 69, dislocated her left shoulder when she fainted on Tuesday while launching the party´s campaign for next year´s Uttar Pradesh state election in the holy city of Varanasi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi´s parliamentary constituency.

Yesterday, Sonia Gandhi was successfully treated for a shoulder injury that she sustained during her roadshow.

“Mrs Sonia Gandhi has been shifted out of the ICU and is making steady progress in the hospital”.

Later, Modi also spoke to Dikshit, who was accompanying Sonia and inquired about her health. General secretary, UP Congress, Mukund Tiwari told TOI ” Party leadership had initially fixed August 16 for the roadshow of party president Sonia Gandhi in Allahabad but leaders have now decided it fix it on November 19″.
