Mets trade for NL RBI leader Jay Bruce
Jay Bruce brought his two large Cincinnati Reds gear bags into the Mets’ clubhouse, walked into a filled interview room and pronounced himself in a NY state of mind. The Reds were reportedly concerned with the medical records of a minor leaguer included in the original proposal – later confirmed to be pitcher Chris Flexen – and both clubs agreed to rework the trade.

The Reds will receive infielder Dilson Herrera and left handed pitcher Max Wotell. Bruce, who is hitting.360 with eight home runs and 52 RBIs in 89 at-bats with runners in scoring position, is expected to bring some much-needed fire to the lineup. With the Mets struggling for runs, his.265 average with 25 homers and 80 RBI will most definitely help. The Mets called his strain mild and announced he is day-to-day, though his playing time is likely to shrink following the acquisition Monday of Jay Bruce from the Cincinnati Reds.
Well, they did. They got Bruce from the Cincinnati Reds, a year to the deadline day after getting Cespedes from the Detroit Tigers.
Jay Bruce is probably not the best fit for the New York Mets.
The Mets acquired a familiar face, sending reliever Antonio Bastardo to the Pittsburgh Pirates for left-hander Jon Niese. I think I can help out in the clubhouse, ” Rodriguez said Tuesday, “but if not, I have two handsome daughters waiting for me in Miami”. In other words, if Bruce is a clutch hitter, why did he bat.180 with runners in scoring position in 2015? He’s started all but one game in right field; he played center field in that lone start.
The 29-year-old, a three-time All-Star, has a contract that includes a team option for 2017. He was a third-round pick in the 2015 draft.
“I think when you have good players in the lineup, all that stuff is going to eventually even out”, Bruce said.
The Mets had to pay a very steep price to get Bruce, but that extra year of control is worth it for them. It’s only slightly higher than Bastardo, who has pitched to 4.74 ERA coming out of the bullpen for the Mets.
Bruce homered in five straight games in late July, a career best.
There are broader long-term questions, too, for a Mets team that has just a 27.9% chance of making the playoffs this year, according to FanGraphs.
Bruce, who turned 30 in April, is in the midst of not just a renaissance at the plate in 2016 after a pair of down seasons, but what’s on pace to be an an offensive career year.

The Marlins acquired Rea on Friday in a seven-player deal with the Padres, but he had to leave Saturday’s game against St. Louis in the fourth inning and was put on the 15-day disabled list with a right elbow sprain. The only time that Collins might want to sit Bruce is when the Mets face a lefty on the mound. General manager Sandy Alderson hopes a trade for Jay Bruce can have a similar effect.
