The president was particularly critical of Donald Trump’s attacks on the family of Captain Humayun Khan, a fallen Muslim American soldier.

The latest being Trump’s flap with the Khan family, the parents of Army Capt. Humayun Khan, who was killed in Iraq in 2004.

“The Republican nominee is unfit to serve as president”, Obama said at a White House news conference alongside the Prime Minister of Singapore.

“We need loyal people in this country”, Trump added in the interview. “And to focus on anything other than that is missing the point”.

Khizr Khan and his wife Ghazala appeared at the Democratic National Convention last week to criticize the Republican presidential candidate for proposing a ban on Muslim immigration into the US.

Amid the feuding within Republican ranks, prominent party donor and fundraiser Meg Whitman has publicly endorsed Democrat Hillary Clinton, saying Donald Trump’s “demagoguery” had undermined the national fabric. Trump responded by taking note of Ghazala Khan’s silence, suggesting that she wasn’t allowed to speak. “I am not going to support Hillary, but in America, we have the right to write somebody in or skip the vote, and vote for Mark Kirk in IL for instance, and that is what it is looking like for me today”.

Trump – who on Monday tweeted kind words for the speaker’s underdog primary opponent, Wisconsin businessman Paul Nehlen – told The Washington Post that Ryan had asked for his support, a claim the Speaker’s spokesman denied. John McCain in their upcoming state primaries.

Mike Pence, Donald Trump’s running mate, declined on Thursday to endorse Arizona Sen.

Trump shrugged it off, saying, “I read a lot and I watch a lot” and “many people discussed this”.

“But if I see and hear things that I think are wrong, I’m not going to sit by and say nothing because I think I have a duty as a Republican leader to defend Republican principles and our party’s brand”. Moreover, it seems that any criticism of Trump will be met with hatred from him and his supporters.

In a statement, Pence said he and Trump believe Khan is “an American hero” and said “his family, like all Gold Star families, should be cherished by every American”.
