Emirates plane catches fire upon landing at Dubai airport

It was a close shave for passengers on board an Emirates flight from Thiruvananthapuram to Dubai, which crash landed at the Dubai International Airport on Wednesday.

The camera then shows people sliding down the slide onto the tarmac of the runway and even shows the plane’s engine on fire before it turns off. There were 226 Indian citizens on board the flight, as well as 24 United Kingdom nationals and 11 UAE nationals.

Cape Town – Dubai International Airport is slowly returning to normal following an incident involving Emirates flight EK521, en route from India.

In its statement, IndiGo said, “Due to unavailability of runway at Dubai airport, all IndiGo flights operating to and fro India stands cancelled for August 4, 2016”.

The closure of Dubai International Airport for more than five hours after Wednesday’s crash landing is believed to have cost the emirate about $330m. The footage posted on the social network show the Boeing 777 bursting into flames and the huge plum of dark smoke coming from the plane.

Children are screaming and frightened passengers can be heard screaming as the crew makes its way to one of the plane’s emergency exits. Emirates chairman and chief executive Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum told a press conference that 10 people had been admitted to hospital after the incident.

“Laptop, laptop”, a passenger can be heard saying in the video.

Traffic at Dubai airport remained disrupted Thursday with 237 flights cancelled, a day after an Emirates plane crash-landed and shut down the Middle East´s busiest airport for several hours. Emirates said its “main priority now is the safety and well-being of all involved”.

“After resuming departure operations at 18.30hrs, Dubai Airports has now commenced arrival operations at DXB under restricted capacity”. It diverted 23 incoming flights to Dubai’s second airport, other Emirati airports in Sharjah, Al Ain and Fujairah, and airports in nearby Oman and Bahrain.

Planemaker Boeing said in a statement it was monitoring the situation in Dubai and it would be working with Emirates to gather more information.

Ms. Jeri, a Dubai resident from Ethiopia whose flight from terminal one to Addis Ababa was cancelled on Wednesday said “everything was handled very professionally”.
