Part of Northwest Wynwood “Cleared” of Zika Virus, Health Department Says

The CDC on Monday issued an unprecedented travel warning that advised pregnant women and their partners to avoid the Wynwood area in Miami – the first time the agency has warned people against traveling to an American neighborhood for fear of infection.

In a release from Texas Medicaid officials, the department said it will cover two cans of mosquito repellent per month for women between the ages of 10 and 45 or who are pregnant as a way to combat the Zika virus.

Zika is being spread by mosquitoes in the state, according to the Florida Department of Health, with 15 cases confirmed in Miami-Dade County.

On the other hand, a senior State Department official confirmed that there are two US diplomats overseas who had contracted the virus.

14 cases of locally transmitted Zika cases have popped up in areas near Miami. Previously, free testing had been limited to pregnant women living in a one-square-mile zone north of downtown Miami where the state believes the virus is being actively spread by mosquitoes. Health officials also reported three new travel-related Zika infections in Miami-Dade on Tuesday, raising the statewide total to 336 people who acquired the disease overseas.
