Turkey issues arrest warrants for 100 at Ankara military hospital

Turkey meanwhile summoned a senior German diplomat, a day after a rally of tens of thousands of Erdogan supporters in Cologne in opposition to the coup.

The government says the coup was instigated by USA -based Muslim cleric Fethullah Gulen, a former Erdogan ally who has been living in self-imposed exile in Pennsylvania.

“I think we can see skepticism on the part of the United States on the prospects of direct evidence or clear evidence or irrefutable evidence linking Fethullah Gulen to the failed coup plot”, he said. Turkey has demanded his extradition, but Washington has asked for evidence of the cleric’s involvement.

Ankara accuses Gulen of masterminding the coup and says it is seeking to remove all trace of his influence in Turkish institutions. About 18,000 people have been detained or arrested, a lot of them from the military, and authorities have said the purge of those suspected of links to Gulen in the military will continue.

The Turkish lira plunged as much as 8 per cent against the USA dollar in the aftermath of the July 15 coup attempt. “It’s called “rule of law”,” Renzi tweeted.

But despite increasing indications that his followers were behind the failed military uprising, analysts say concerns about whether Gulen could get a fair trial complicate Turkey’s bid. He criticised a move to have force commanders report directly to the defence minister, saying it would “ruin the chain of command”.

Germany is clashing with Turkey over its lack of support for the Turkish government’s violent quashing of an attempted coup in July. “There is no turning back”.

Erdogan, criticized in the West for the scale of a post-coup crackdown, told RAI: “Italy should be attending to the mafia, not my son”.

“Orders from overseas have been cancelled”.

More than 60,000 people in Turkey’s military, judiciary, civil service, and education sectors have been detained, fired, or investigated since the coup, leading to Western criticism that Erdogan is cracking down on all forms of dissent and tighten his control of the country.

Celik added that the military coup attempt aimed at weakening Turkey’s development. Both have carried out suicide bombings in Turkey over the past year.

The Turkish president lashed out at Washington and the country’s other North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies a day after the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, U.S. Marine Corps General Joseph Dunford, met with Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim – an encounter created to try to narrow the rift that has developed since the July 15 coup attempt.

Police were searching the Gulhane Military Medical Academy (GATA) hospital in the capital, the private NTV television reported.

Gulen is accused of implementing the campaign to overthrow the state by forming what is commonly known as the parallel state.

Pakistan promised Turkey’s visiting foreign minister on Tuesday it would investigate schools Ankara wants shut for alleged links to Gulen but stopped short of agreeing to close them. In response, Turkey’s foreign minister threatened to “renounce” the deal.
