The rainfall that caused the devastating flash flood Ellicott City, Md., Saturday evening, killing two people, was a 1-in-1,000 year weather event, meteorologists said.

As of Tuesday, debris “by the truckload” was being hauled out of downtown Ellicott City, but there’s still lots of work to be done. All but Watsula was rescued.
Callers reported people clinging to cars as the vehicles were being swept away. His girlfriend was able to escape, but Blevins was swept away.
One woman who called Howard County 911 provided the address for the Bean Hollow coffee shop on Main Street where eight people were trapped by the rapidly rising water.
NBC reports that according to the county, at least “four homes were destroyed, and 20 to 30 others sustained substantial damage”.
“We thought we were gone”, one resident told The Washington Post.
Maryland’s Governor, Larry Hogan, said it was shocking and tragic. Kittleman said in the aftermath of the storm, the city looked like a “war zone”.
Howard County Executive Allan Kittleman and Lt. Gov. Boyd Rutherford plan to attend the recovery and information session for residents and businesses Monday afternoon with representatives of county and state agencies and nonprofits offering resources.
