After handing out $62.5 million in new money to Tyrann Mathieu earlier this week, the Arizona Cardinals opened the pursestrings again, this time for their two offensive stars: Carson Palmer and Larry Fitzgerald both signed one-year-extensions, the team announced Friday. Details have not yet been reported (leaked); without them, it’s impossible to know whether they are “real” extensions or whether the Cardinals put pen to paper in order to avoid speculation and/or media inquiries regarding the chances that Palmer (who had been signed through 2017) and Fitzgerald (who had been signed through 2016) were entering their final season with the team.

Palmer’s extension is worth $24.35 million, and the next two years of his contract are fully guaranteed, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

“Each of them had contracts that were due to expire in the next year or two so these extensions provide a measure of certainty and clarity for the players and organisation, both now and in the years ahead”. He is entering his 13th National Football League season.

Will the Cardinals take the next step this coming season as they look to win their first Super Bowl in their franchise’s history? It’s only fitting that he signed a deal that will potentially allow him to retire with the team that drafted him third overall in 2004.

If the Cardinals want to sign outside linebacker Chandler Jones to a long-term deal after this season, it’s going to come with a hefty price tag.

Tyrann Mathieu and Patrick Peterson, the two key defensive players have each been extended by Keim in the a year ago as well.

Another benefit to keeping Palmer around another two seasons is it gives the Cardinals more time to groom Palmer’s replacement – a process which needs to start sooner rather than later.
