Amazon today is showcasing its first ever branded air cargo plane during Seafair’s Air Show, an annual community celebration taking place in Amazon’s hometown of Seattle. The company plans to launch a small fleet of their own planes in order to speed up delivery that would normally take much longer on commercial shipment crafts.

The online shopping site was responsible for shipping 1 billion packages past year, and after reliability issues with outside carriers such as FedEx and UPS, the company made the decision to maintain its own fleet of cargo planes.

The American Internet-based giant unveiled “Amazon One” at the Seattle Seafair Air Show on Friday.

Before drones, however, Amazon will add Prime Air branded jetliners to its arsenal of shipping logistics.

In the past year, the company announced Amazon Flex which is an app for selected states that allows citizens with their vehicles to act as Amazon delivery services to upgrade trucking capacity.

The aircraft mark Amazon’s latest effort to take further control of its own logistics operations, rather than rely on partners like the UPS and FedEx.

Amazon’s Senior Vice President of Worldwide Operations, Dave Clark spoke enthusiastically about the importance of air travel in delivering goods to Prime members in a timely and prompt manner.

Their second quarter profit accounts to a massive $857 million on $30 billion.

With the addition of the plane fleet, the company is seeking to facilitate the process of moving packages from one Amazon warehouse to the other. Amazon has not been shy about competing in businesses areas far-flung from its e-commerce roots. As Clark told GeekWire on Thursday, “once we have all 40 of these planes deployed, there’s the opportunity to create new connections for customers”.
