Russian Federation have 271 athletes cleared for Olympics

A three-person International Olympic Committee panel makes the final decision for giving clearance to the athletes after recommendations were sent by their respective sports federations.

The panel includes the Head of the IOC Medical Commission, Ugur Erdener from Germany; the Chair of the IOC Athletes’ Commission Claudia Bokel who is also a member of the IOC Executive Board; Juan Antonio Samaranch Jr. who is also an IOC Executive Board Member, The Independent reported.

The original size of the Russian team was 389.

The International Weightlifting Federation excluded all eight Russians entered for Rio last week and the Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas) ruled the ban had been “properly applied”.

The International Boxing Association recommended that all 11 Russian boxers, nine men and two women, should be allowed to compete. An earlier Cas ruling in 2011 ruled that so-called ‚”double jeopardy” was not enforceable.

Russia’s entire track and field team have been banned from Rio following reports of state-backed systematic doping.

About 70 Russian athletes left Moscow on Thursday for Rio de Janeiro to take part in the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

The applications against the decisions taken by IOC and worldwide sports federations were filed by Anastasia Karabelshikova and Ivan Podshivalov (rowing), as well as Yulia Efimova (swimming).

But it has presented a fresh headache for International Federations on the eve of the Rio 2016 Opening Ceremony. “I couldn’t be more proud and relieved”.

She also served as the mayor of the Olympic Village at the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics, an honorary role, but upset many athletes in the build-up to the Games by backing Russian President Vladimir Putin’s controversial anti-gay law.

Bach pointed to the near-unanimous support he received from members over the International Olympic Committee decision, with only Britain’s Adam Pengilly voting against.

By Thursday evening, the number of Russian athletes cleared had climbed to 271, with as many as five more still awaiting word as to their fates.

He said neither the name of the athlete nor the sport would be made public until the B-sample had been tested or the athlete waived the right for the second test.

CAS said in a statement that the tribunal in Rio had set “a new record of cases for one edition of the Olympic Games” before the Rio Olympic Games kickstart here on Friday.

“You can be clean outside this system”.
