SpaceVR Kickstarter Project Aims to Put Virtual-Reality Camera in Space

The panoramic video recorder, called the Overview One, will consist of 12 GoPro cameras modified for use in outer space, where extreme temperature and lack of air and oxygen could easily break the devices, that will tape for two hours at a time, according to Wired.

You can get a year-long subscription to SpaceVR up front by donating $250, which also grants you early access to the content. Other donation rewards include things like 3D models and files of the camera, a Google Cardboard headset, and there are even levels where you can sponsor a classroom or entire school’s worth of access to SpaceVR.

The goal is to capture the trip in a 360-degree view to be used for a virtual reality headset program that would let people actually see what it is like to go to space. The privilege of space travel is one that has only been experienced by 536 humans, quite literally, a negligible percentage of the world’s population of 7 billion.

SpaceVR launched the Kickstarter to cover launch costs and the first year of operation in space.

“We want to build a strong community that understands that space exploration is now in our hands”. The Overview One would be made with 3D printed components – printed in space, by the way – which are assembled on the ISS to capture any happenings in orbit. “Backers will choose where we go next, be it another spacecraft or a distant planet”, said Isaac DeSouza, co-founder and CTO of SpaceVR. The company has also secured former astronauts, notable scientists and space entrepreneurs on its board to advise on business and space-related matters. They do already have a few high profile backers, however, including Apollo astronaut Edgar Mitchell and game developer/space tourist Richard Garriott. “I later learned that this sensation is common among those who have been to space, and is known as the Overview Effect. I am excited to see SpaceVR launch its Kickstarter project and take the first steps to making this happen”. SpaceVR claims to bring the fantastic experience to many people on the planet.

A new crowdfunding campaign aims to raise enough money to put a virtual-reality camera aboard the worldwide Space Station. In sharing this unique experience beyond the astronaut community, SpaceVR aims to fulfill its mission of uniting humanity in protecting Earth’s fragile environment and working together to resolve conflict.
