“Today we failed in the goalscoring category so we need to get better”, said defender Marquinhos.

Clearly their are still scars from their 7-1 defeat by Germany in the World Cup semi-finals two years ago.

After an impressive opening spell by Owen Da Gama’s side, Brazil started to enjoy most of the possession after the 10-minute mark but struggled to carve out chances.

Brazil is searching for an global title with superstar Neymar as the main man. With the past failures in the past to secure a gold, the Brazilians are looking for a strong start against South Africa in today’s men’s soccer in the Rio Olympics. The sturdy and skillful striker now plays for Santos, the same team where Neymar thrived before leaving for Barcelona. “I’m disappointed. I won’t be able to sleep tonight because of that one”.

It means that the group is wide open, but South Africa have already navigated a way past the Brazil tsunami.

The visitors were dealt a heavy blow as they had to play with 10 men from the 58th minute after midfielder Mothobi Mvala got his marching orders – this was after he received a second yellow card in a space of few minutes.

The Mamelodi Sundowns lynchpin was in fine form, particularly in the first half, as he used his pace and skill to test the Brazilian defence when South Africa countered.

Next up for Brazil are Iraq, who also drew 0-0 with Denmark in their Group A opener. South Africa was prepared for this, and just cleared the ball out of the box in any direction. Argentina was unbeaten in winning gold during its last two appearances in 2004 and 2008. We’ll face more difficulties yet.

Portugal 2, Argentina 0: In Group D in Rio de Janeiro, Portugal defeated two-time Olympic champion Argentina with goals by Goncalo Paciencia in the 66th minute and Pite in the 84th.
