Fans of Christina Grimmie have criticised the Teen Choice Awards for not mentioning or paying tribute to the late singer, despite her winning her first award.
The awards night was hosted by former Nickelodeon star Victoria Justice and wrestler John Cena.
At the weekend prizegiving, Jessica Alba introduced a group of people affected by gun violence to the stage, including the son of Alton Sterling, who was shot dead by police in Louisiana last month (Jul16), and victims of the Pulse nightclub shooting in Orlando, a tragedy which occurred just two days after Grimmie was murdered. “They are the brothers, sisters, daughters and family members of recent victims of gun violence: I’m talking about Aurora, Baton Rogue, Dallas, Minneapolis, Orlando, San Bernardino, Newtown”.
“Now, more than ever, we need to stop, feel and ask, ‘What’s going on?'” she added. Ne-Yo sang “What’s Going On” and together they encouraged everyone to use the hashtag #StopTheViolence.
Critics also point to advertisements for the Teen Choice Awards that seemed to imply that Grimmie would be recognized during the broadcast.
“Empire” star Serayah McNeill brought down the house with her hit, “Look But Don’t Touch”.
Hollywood’s favorite stars and performers have gathered at The Forum in Los Angeles, California, on July 31 for the 2016 Teen Choice Awards.
