Padres under scrutiny over medical records disclosure

They felt they had been traded damaged goods, so they traded Rea back to the Padres for Castillo.

The San Diego Padres were one of the busiest teams ahead of the Major League Baseball trade deadline, and now they’re drawing some scrutiny around Major League Baseball regarding their disclosure of medical records.

It has been a tumultuous few weeks for San Diego Padres starting pitcher Colin Rea. The Marlins were reportedly thrown off guard by this, because there didn’t appear to be any prior indications that Rea may have a troublesome elbow.

Olney reports that Rea had ongoing elbow troubles dating back to his time with San Diego, and that the Marlins were unaware of those issues when they swung the deal for the right-hander.

Another trade the Padres made was a 7-player deal with the Marlins.

On the Rea front, the Padres announced on Friday that he’ll need Tommy John surgery. According to sources, the Red Sox have become aware of medical information with Pomeranz that they believe was not properly disclosed during trade talks. The Red Sox acquired Pomeranz from the Padres in exchange for highly touted pitching prospect Anderson Espinoza, and Boston’s claim is they, too, were not given full information on Pomeranz at the time of the trade. It is unclear at this point whether the league will punish the Padres in any way. Sources say the Marlins maintain that they were not aware of this at the time the trade was executed. Still, though, any hint of an elbow problem would have been cause for concern from the Marlins’ perspective. Olney also reported that Major League Baseball is aware of the concerns and is now reviewing those specific exchanges, which was later confirmed by Dennis Lin of the San Diego Union-Tribune. Medical review of all players involved in any proposed deal is a standard part of the process.
