Illustrating the escalating tension between the candidate and the party, Trump pointedly thanked the primary opponent of Republican House of Representatives Speaker Paul Ryan on Monday for his “kind words” after Ryan had issued a statement saying the sacrifice of the parents, Khizr and Ghazala Khan, should be honored.

Criticism followed the Republican nominee – including from members of the Republican Party like House Speaker Paul Ryan – and Trump refused to support Ryan in the primary for his re-election in Wisconsin.NBC News reported that Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus is upset over Trump’s actions, while ABC News reported that senior Republican officials are exploring options if Trump chose to drop out. “But we have to fix it without cost overruns”, Trump said this week. Some supporters hope Pence will counterbalance Trump’s more provocative remarks.
