She typically ran the path with her father, who was not with her because of an injury.

Vetrano’s father helped police search Tuesday night and pings from her cell phone led them to a marshy area about 15 feet away from the running path. He said he asked her not to go alone, according to local ABC-owned station WABC.

Her parents became anxious when at 7 p.m. she still hadn’t returned, nor had she answered her cell phone.

She normally ran with her father at the time she left Tuesday, but he didn’t accompany her that day, police have said. He noted that Vetrano’s old boyfriend with whom she recently broke up is not a suspect. They also said that there is a security video of the jogger running along the edge of the park at about 5:45 p.m.

“We will out there for several days”, Boyce said, speaking at police headquarters on Thursday. “The section where Vetrano’s body was found is often bypassed by people using the longer routes”. A medical examiner said on Wednesday that 30-year-old Karina Vetrano of Queens was strangled and ruled her death a homicide. Both Vetrano and her father attended Archbishop Malloy High School in Queens.

“He thought their relationship was more than casual, but she disagreed”, the source for The Daily News said.

Friends and family gathered at a wake Friday for a woman who was found dead in a Howard Beach park after she vanished during an afternoon jog. “That’s your routine, so she went and said she’d be all right”.

The NYPD told The Independent they had no figures for the number of women who have been killed or attacked while jogging, although there were a total of 93 people raped by strangers in New York City previous year.

Authorities don’t know if the incident was random or if she was targeted, but neighbors said Wednesday that vagrants live in the nearby woods and illegal activities also take place in he area. She graduated in 2015 with a master’s degree from St. John’s University and worked as a caterer at the Vetro Lounge in Howard Beach. “I just can’t even begin to grasp that”.
