Trump struck a rare conciliatory tone at a Wisconsin rally on Friday, imploring his party to unite behind him and opening a full-throttle attack on Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton.
Trump later declined to endorse Ryan, although Ryan said Thursday he still supports Trump, despite some sharp language distancing himself from the Republican nominee.
In an effort to fix some of the damage he had inflicted on his presidential campaign, Donald Trump endorsed House Speaker Paul Ryan to end a four-day standoff that exposed the deeps chasms in the Republican Party over his candidacy.
Ryan said he “rejects” any religious test for entering the country – a clear jab at one of Trump’s evolving immigration proposals – and that “Captain Khan was one such courageous example” of Muslim-Americans who have “served valiantly in our military and made the ultimate sacrifice”.
“We will have disagreements, but we will disagree as friends and never stop working together toward victory”, Trump said.
In the interview, Vos says Trump needs to apologize for his comments about Ryan.
But in neighboring Wisconsin, a state Trump insists he can win, the state’s best-known Republicans said they were too busy to attend his evening event.
Paul Ryan and other elected Republicans haven’t held back criticism for Trump either. John McCain on Friday, capping off a wild week in which the two powerful politicians reignited their ongoing war of words. Polls this summer by Marquette University Law School find 84-percent of Republicans and independents in Ryan’s district have a favorable opinion of him, with just a 9-percent unfavorable rating.
“He’s a good man, and he’s a good guy”, Trump said. Trump has also tweeted a series of pro-Nehlen messages in recent days.
Ryan said “of course” there’s a line, but “where that line gets crossed, I don’t know where that is”.
